Brief History of Karenni Community of Texas

Karenni people fled the civil war in Burma. They all hoped to find a better place elsewhere after being in refugee camps for so long and not being able to return home. Therefore, for a better future, many of us chose to resettle in the United States and other third countries. However, arrival in the land of opportunity called United States does not always guarantee peace, stability, and security, at least for the moment.

Houston's "New" World Refugee Day

June 16th is set as Houston World Refugee Day.

“The city of Houston is pleased to welcome all refugees from around the world, who we trust will find a greater opportunity in Houston than they could anywhere else, and I’m proud as the mayor of Houston to welcome them home,” Parker said in a news conference in City Hall’s third-floor proclamation room,” where she declared June 16 World Refugee Day in the city.
